Ketamine-Assisted Therapy
You may find different definitions of ketamine-assisted therapy, or KAT. At Imagine, we broadly define KAT as the use of ketamine to enhance the psychotherapeutic component of treatment. It is very different than traditional talk therapy and more consistent with psychedelic therapy.
KAT may be delivered in a variety of ways and we will discuss with each client what may work best for them. One of our therapists may meet with a client briefly for preparation before their ketamine session and then the bulk of the therapeutic component occurs after ketamine. The client goes through treatment on their own while being monitored medically and psychotherapy is performed following the ketamine treatment in the clinic or within 24-48 hours of the treatment. This appears to be when the brain is most pliable and neuroplasticity is at its height. Alternatively, the psychotherapist will stay with the client throughout their entire ketamine experience. These sessions may last up to several hours. Ketamine acts as a lubricant to aid in the therapeutic process often allowing for a deeper dive into the psyche that would not be possible with therapy or ketamine alone.
Prior to any KAT work, the client will need at least 1-2 prep sessions with the therapist. There is a certain vulnerability that is present when in a non-ordinary state of consciousness and we want to ensure the client is comfortable with both the therapist and the process.
